The report seeks to gather accurate data to give a picture of what is currently happening to millions of animals in the UK. It is divided into separate indicators, each of which is allocated either a green, amber, red or grey traffic light. These will show whether the situation has improved, stayed the same or deteriorated since last year.
The report Everyone's a winner (Sept 2006), found that birds reared to the RSPCA standards were healthier due to:
- an 82 per cent reduction in hock burn - leg sores cause by contact with wet floor litter and high levels of ammonia from excrement
- a 65 per cent lower mortality rate - birds that have either died, or had to be euthanased on farm during the rearing process.
The report also provides evidence to support the argument that rearing chickens to higher welfare standards can be mutually beneficial - not only to chickens but to the producer, the retailer and the consumer.
The RSPCA's report on the UK laying hen industry looks into the age of UK caged egg production facilities. The research reveals that the vast majority of UK conventional caged egg producers will already have written off previous investment costs by 2012 and would need to invest in new facilties by then, irrespective of the EU Directive 1999/74/EC. The conclusions of the report support the EU ban on conventional battery cages for egg production from 2012.
The RSPCA's higher welfare chicken report sheds light on the three major welfare issues currently affecting chickens bred for their meat: fast growth rates, high stocking densities and inappropriate lighting.
