WSPA and Humane Slaughter

WSPA exist to tackle animal cruelty wherever we find it.

Globally over 60 billion farm animals are raised and killed annually, most in cruel inhumane conditions.

WSPA are campaigning to stop cruel intensive farming practices and for the introduction of humane slaughter techniques. These improvements would be a huge step forward in farm animal welfare, relieving the unnecessary suffering of billions of sentient creatures.

What’s wrong?

Pigs are being slaughtered while fully conscious in Taiwan. This is not only incredibly cruel; it's against the law.

What can be done?

Modern slaughter methods exist to ensure animals don’t die in pain or fear. Taiwan has laws to protect animals at slaughter but they are not being enforced.

I am writing to register my disgust at a video I have just seen showing the horrific slaughter of pigs in Taiwan. The video shows pigs being struck over the head with iron bars, having their throats cut whilst fully conscious and being shackled without prior stunning. Apart from being completely inhumane, these practices are illegal in Taiwan. I am appalled that your Government allows such cruelty to go unchecked. This is not the first time the brutality of Taiwan's slaughterhouses has been exposed. In 2000, a similar investigation first uncovered the horrific suffering in all of Taiwan's slaughterhouses. Your Government responded by investing time and money in equipment and training to ensure that all animals were handled and slaughtered humanely. However, in 2005 /06 a second investigation revealed that the equipment lies unused and the suffering continues. This suffering is completely unnecessary - simple, affordable and humane methods exist . I urge you to put a stop to this suffering once and for all by: Revising the Animal Protection Act to include licensing scheme for livestock workers undertaking transportation and slaughter. Raising the status of the administrative body on animal protection (an independent department of animal protection within Ministry of Agriculture). Introducing a division of Farm Animal Welfare & Health Inspectors to carry out routine and spot-check audits. Introducing a third-party auditing - scheme to produce welfare records of farms, markets and slaughterhouse. Ensure these records are made publicly available. Yours sincerely
