Be a compassionate shopper

The average British consumer will, by the age of 70, have consumed 550 poultry, 36 pigs, 36 sheep and 8 cows. The way in which these animals lived and died will depend on the choices made by a whole generation of shoppers.

Caring about the lives of the farm animals is a choice we can all make. In this section we explain what assurance schemes are and how they can improve conditions for farm animals.

We don’t offer a list of individual schemes and their standards: there are so many of them and we can’t endorse a particular scheme. However, what we do offer is an outline of what the basic principles of assurance schemes are, what they do and do not assure about welfare, and which particular schemes have high levels of animal welfare.

Hopefully this will make you aware of some of the existing assurance schemes, as well as helping you to decide whether a new scheme is one you want to support.
